Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in April 2013 were about 6.7 million metric tons (Mt), down very slightly from the level in April 2012, according to a recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through April were 22.0 Mt, essentially unchanged.
The leading portland cement-producing states in April were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania, in descending order. These states shipped about 46 percent of the total shipments for the month. The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, in descending order) received about 40 percent of the April total shipments.
Clinker production totaled about 5.6 Mt, nearly 3 percent more than the output in April 2012. Production for the year through April was 19.3 Mt, up slightly. The leading clinker-producing states in April were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama, in descending order.
Masonry cement shipments of about 183,000 metric tons (t) were up by 10 percent from those of April 2012. Shipments for the year through April were 618,000 t, up by about 4 percent. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee, and received about 49 percent of April’s total shipments.
Moreover, based on preliminary results, total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in May were about 7 Mt. Shipments for the year through May were 27.3 Mt.
